Design (b), (c) and (d) achieved flicker-free performance with ultra-fast DMD display and fluid-membrane lens. In (b) the DMD is directly synchronized with the tunable lens, while in (c) the lens is constantly driven, and its focal length is tracked in real time by an infrared (IR) optical path constructed by dichroic mirrors (DMs) and a position sensing detector. In configuration (d), the DMD synchronized with the tunable lens is employed as a fast-response pixelated backlight for the LCD panel
